Summary expansion
The loose photographs are primarily cabinet cards which consist of paper photographs mounted on thick cardboard mounts having gilt beveled edges, rounded corners, and usually, photographer studio advertisements on verso. There are 29 large cards (11x17 cm) and the 6 small cards (10x13 cm), most with printed or hand-written captions on front or back. The images document travels and climbs in the French Alps, including Mont Blanc near Chamonix and St. Gervais-les-Bains, and Aiguille du Dru and Mer de Glace near Montenvert; and in the Swiss Alps, Grindelwald and Jungfrau near Interlaken and the Lauterbrunen valley, Mt. Rigi near Vitznau and Lake Lucerne, and Rothhorn and Weisshorn near Riffelalp. Many of the photos are landscape views of the peaks, valleys, crevasses, glaciers, and lakes of the regions, and there are also numerous shots of climbers in their gear, with ice picks, axes, ladders, walking sticks, ropes, and telescopes. Several views show alpine huts, mountain hotels, such as Grand Hotel Montenvert, and the railroad station in Kleine Scheideck. Also of interest are views of the Rigi cog railroad and the funicular (cable) railway in Montreux. The statue in Chamonix of Horace Bénédict Saussure and Jacques Balmat commemorating the centenary of the ascent of Mont Blanc (by Balmat in 1786 and by Saussure in 1787) was taken by August Couttet of Chamonix, one of the well-known Alpine photographers represented in the collection. Other photographers include August Garcin and Florentin Charnaux of Geneva; Arthur Gabler of Interlaken; Joseph Tairraz of Chamonix; Adolphe Braun & Cie. of Dornach (Alsace); Numa Allantaz of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, and Viron of Lourdes, whose view is included of the route from Pierrefitte to Cauterets in the French Pyrenees south of Lourdes. With the cabinet cards are two amateur snapshots of members of a climbing party, one dated July 1878. Many of the 60 small photographs in the album are smaller versions of the cabinet card images, documenting an ascent of Mont Blanc in July 1878, or slightly different shots of the landscapes portrayed in the cabinet cards. The album includes several portraits of women climbers and women guides
