Summary
Album of photographs of Guam, dated between 1926 and 1929, by an unknown photographer, possibly someone associated with the United States Navy which governed Guam between 1898 and 1941, and again following the Japanese surrender of World War II. The first eight photos are large hand-tinted prints that capture the natural beauty of Guam--its turquoise waters, white sand beaches, groves of coconut palms, and tropical pink sunsets. Five additional hand-colored prints at the end of the album include scenes of daily life of the local people, the Chamorros, with their carabaos or water buffalo and bamboo thatched houses. These are examples of the hand-colored photographs that became popular in the 1920s, and appealed to travelers and members of the military as travel souvenirs. There are several large black-and-white photographs, one of the Royal Palm Drive leading to the Governor's Palace. Glossy black-and-white snapshots (18 x 12 cm or smaller) include views of Governor and Mrs. Lloyd Stowell Shapely and their dog Jiggs standing at the gate of the Palace (Shapely was naval governor of Guam from 1926 to 1929); views from 1928 and 1929 of what appears to be an annual awards ceremony held on the lawn of the naval base [?]; and views of water buffalo, pineapples waiting to be harvested on a pineapple plantation, and a native boy holding four pineapples. The large size and fine quality of many of the photographs suggest that the photographer was likely a U.S. Navy photographer or personnel with access to sophisticated equipment. Although a brown paper label on upper cover is captioned "Guam--M.I.," none of the photographs seems to be of the Marshall Islands
