- Summary expansion
- The photographer is identified in one of the photos as fourth engineer officer Peter Pennal aboard the British India Steam Navigation Company steamship, the "Chakdina" ("Me Pennal 4 E/O Chakdina"). Economic expansion and prosperity in British-ruled Burma (Myanmar)--though at the time rejected by the peasant class--is the undertone of this album as seen in the photos of cargo ships carrying teak timber, coal and live goats. Many large teak rafts are seen floating on the Irrawaddy River; one of these scenes is captioned "Rangoon River Frontage" referring to the city of Yangon in the distance. In Moulmein (Mawlamyine), three photos show elephants being used to transport logs at a timber plant, while others show an old pagoda, a monk with a young protégé, a small kid (goat) and the quaint town itself. In Akyab, in Rakhine State, a large cart is pulled down a dirt street by two hardy white oxen. Pennal also worked aboard the SS Winkfield, a cargo ship (previously S.S. War Violet) which was purchased in 1919 by the British India Steam Navigation Company. According to captions, the vessel also cruised to Tavory (presumably Dawei formerly known as Tavoy). Changing to SS Chakdina, Pennal travels from Rangoon as far as Mergui [Myeik] in the extreme south of the country on the coast of an island on the Andaman Sea, where he captures views of the charming village with a hilltop pagoda and its harbour. While in India, after discharging timber in Calcutta, he takes a lovely tour of the city, taking notice of a row of jute mills on the Hooghly (Hugli) River upon arrival. In Madras (Chennai) the vessel is loaded with coal by native men and women using woven baskets. Evidently afforded more time ashore, he visits Cuddalore, in Tamil Nadu, where women are again working very hard in a wood yard, a man is crushing grain at his homestead, and children are fascinated by the foreigner dressed in white. Christmas 1930 is spent at sea, but a brief leave is taken at the historic and luxurious Mount Lavinia Hotel in Colombo, February 1931. Occasional photographs are taken at Penang in Malaysia, and at the Port of Victoria, located in the Seychelles archipelago. Some of Pennal's photos document daily life aboard a cargo ship, and include photographs of the vessel's mechanical features, the ship's cat "Oscar" killing a rat, and hijinks with his fellow crewmembers: Beatty 2nd engineer officer, and Sayers 3rd engineer officer. Numerous other vessels are seen and named, such as the RMS Arankola, RMS Ekma, RMS Dalgoma, and the SS Coconada; mail ships are seen at Calcutta; Chinese junks, dugout canoes, covered river boats and hand carved wood sailing ships appear throughout. The images document the riotous era of the Saya San Rebellion (1930-1932), triggered by anti-colonial and anti-Indian sentiments. Saya San (1876-1931) was a former monk, a physician and the leader of the 'Saya San Rebellion' of 1930-1932 in British Burma. The series of uprisings has been regarded as one of Southeast Asia's quintessential anti-colonial movements. Of special interest are scenes of Bangladesh, then part of British India, including the Chittagong Armory, photographed following the Chittagong Armoury Raid also known as Chittagong uprising, an attempt on 18 April 1930 to raid the armoury of Chittagong police and auxiliary forces by armed revolutionaries for Indian independence led by Surya Sen popularly known as Master-da
