Summary expansion
The album opens with photographs of the land and hills on which the Bilicke would build a large Mission Revival home, "Mariposa" located at 699 Monterey Road, at a cost of a quarter of a million dollars. The house would sit atop a hill, with a view to the ocean, surrounded by terraced gardens and an orchard of orange trees. In July 1903, the large tract of land is still empty, dotted with trees, and several small wooden buildings. Groundbreaking takes place June 14, 1905, with photos documenting the construction that continued throughout the summer and fall; the house is completed in November 1905. Bilicke and his children are pictured in several photos walking on the grounds and playing on the lawn. There are also several photos of the garage and stables; automobiles figure prominently throughout the album. Albert, Gladys and Constant are shown in 1903 riding in their Pope-Toledo automobile, a luxury roadster manufactured in Toledo by the Albert Pope company which sold for $3000. The house and grounds, walks, pond, and expansive view are clearly a source of pride, as they are documented in many photos. In one, Constant wields a butterfly net while his sister Nancy picks flowers. In another photo, dated 1908, Constant with a new firetruck, and Nancy holding a new doll, stand in the parlor before the family Christmas tree which is draped in garlands and lit with candles. Some photos portray the Bilicke children in Halloween costumes, dressed as an Indian princess, an Indian scout, a Japanese girl with fan, a cowboy. Photos of March 1913 document 11 year-old Constant going off to "Camp Harvard" with his father, rows of tents at the camp, and Constant and tent mates in uniform holding rifles. Album also includes a 2-page printed panorama of the San Gabriel Valley
