Summary expansion
The earliest photographs are from 1917, in which a group of young people camp in Strawberry Flats (now called Twin Peaks) in Lake Arrowhead; photos of Big Bear Lake are also dated 1917. The travelers returned often to Lake Arrowhead, as there are other photos of the area from 1924 and 1929, including Forest Home, and Forest Home Dance Hall. The album opens with photos of a car trip to Yosemite in 1924: a group of young people--"Bertha, Ralph, Carl"--often posing in front of their Saxon S-2 Touring Car, explore the giant sequoias in Mariposa Grove, hike to Wawona Point, and camp in Toulomne Meadows. They also photograph their cabin in Mariposa Grove, and a lodge at Fish Camp just outside Yosemite. The travelers were obviously fond of the outdoors and fishing; on earlier trips to Yosemite in 1920 and 1921, they also took photos of Yosemite Falls, Vernal Falls, and Nevada Falls, Camp Curry, Mirror Lake, Tejon Pass, Bridal Veil Creek camp, Half Dome, the Glacier Hotel, Tenaya Lake, and El Portal station (terminus of the Yosemite Valley Railroad). There are also views of Sequoia National Park, including Moro Rock, and fishing on the Keweah River. Donkeys, bears, and elk can be seen in some of the photos. Back home in Highland Park, the travelers pose in front of their home, with their pets. A car trip in 1922 takes them to Owens Valley; Gem Lake, Convict Lake, and Agnew Lake in the Sierra Nevadas; Lake Tahoe, and Grass Lake. In 1923, at Sequoia National Park, they photograph the Gen. Sherman Tree, and pitch their tent at Soldiers Camp (Camp Sequoia), formerly a headquarters camp for the U.S. Army which oversaw the protection of the park between 1891 and 1913. The album includes some early photos of Sherman Oaks in 1928, 1929, 1932, and 1941, where the travelers have built homes and raise chickens; this series of photos documents the transition of Sherman Oaks from rural community to suburban subdivision. There are also photos of homes at 1717 E. Glendon Way in Rosemead (1929), and Blair Ave in South Pasadena (1937); a family picnic in Sherman Oaks (1936?), and a Memorial Day gathering, dated 1936. Also included are 11 colored pictures of different American rivers, cut out from a calendar and mounted at end of album, one to a page
