Summary expansion
The amateur photographs are taken from afar, providing a sense of the great expanses of empty land, still to be settled. Farm houses are small and modest, the orchards and gardens seem newly planted on the dry hillsides, adorned with windmills. Water has always been an issue in southern California. The views of the early city of San Diego, with the ocean in the background, reveal a network of random dirt roads, populated by a hodge-podge of houses of all types. In one photo, a U.S. Navy ship is visible along the coast. The views of the beach at Coronado show beach-goers, fully dressed in dark clothing, sitting on the sand; a long wooden boardwalk leads perhaps to a bath house or refreshment stand. In addition to the farm and beach photos, there is a also photograph of a section of rocky coastline where the ocean has created sea caves; a close-up of a sailing ship, flying the American flag; and a portrait of a bearded man--a prospecter, perhaps--leading his two donkeys
