Summary expansion
The album opens with photographs of the eccentric Lummis dressed as a cowboy, standing with his horse, and dancing the "cuna" with a young Mexican girl in the courtyard of a hacienda. There are three scenes taken at the "old Governor Pico's home," presumably Pico's home El Ranchito, located in Whittier, California, now Pio Pico State Historical Park, including one of Governor Pico himself. Lummis photographed his children--son Keith, and daughter Turbesé (called Rainbow of the Sun by Indians at Isleta Pueblo)--wearing native dress, at the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in San Gabriel, California; his photos of the monastery of the Mission San Fernando in Mission Hills, California depict an empty building, its roof gone, only the poles and beams visible. Other photographs document panning for gold at the Placer mines, and the south veranda at Rancho Camulos in Piru, California, known as "Ramona's home," because it was widely believed to have been the setting for Helen Hunt Jackson's popular novel, Ramona (1884). Photographs of New Mexico include Mexican houses and beautifully woven blankets, Col. Chase's "placita," the mill of San Raphael, N.M., an old Indian mission, and the mission bells. A group of ladies in long skirts stands at the portal of the old convent in San Ildefonso Pueblo. Portraits of Indians from Isleta Pueblo include two small boys--"Ramon and Juan"--an Indian woman at her window, a large portrait of a Pueblo Indian wearing beaded necklaces and a blanket, and a trio of Isleta Indian women. Two photos show how the Indian women ground corn using a "metate." The photograph captioned "The successful hunter," shows a small Indian boy on a donkey, holding a dead rabbit. Lummis has also documented some early primitive Indian wooden carts, the old church at Isleta, the Santa Fe Mission, and portraits of young Indian boys with lariats, young Mexican girls with guitars, and an abstract photo of "yucca from the desert." The five photos at the end of the album are unidentified portraits--men, sitting in a parlor with a piano, a woman sitting in the yard next to a house--perhaps friends or family of Lummis
