Summary expansion
Travelers board a Southern Pacific Railroad train for Portland, and many of the photos record the views along the route: tall pine forests, the Sacramento River, and a mountain peak, probably Black Butte; Mt. Shasta in the background is not visible here, but its snow-capped peak appears in other of the photos. Several clusters of soda springs are found along the Sacramento River between Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta; in Shasta Springs, the train stops to let passengers out to sample the mineral water from special fountains. From the train, the photographer records a lumber mill on the river, and the newly-sawn boards stacked along the tracks awaiting transport. There are three photos of the colonnade and entrance to the Lewis and Clark Exposition, held in Portland June 1-Oct. 15, 1905 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Also included are photos of the steamer Charles R. Spencer steamer navigating the Cascade Locks east of Portland on the Columbia River, Columbia River rapids, and a waterfalls, probably Multnomah Falls, on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. The Spencer was a popular excursion boat that ran the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, between Portland and The Dalles to the east. Photographs of the coastal steamer "Cottage City," which the Pacific Coast Steamship Company operated between Seattle and Sitka, Alaska, suggest that the travelers continued their journey by ship--probably from Seattle--up the Inside Passage along the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska. This portion of the trip is documented with photographs of the Parliament Buildings in Victoria, B.C., a Pacific Northwest Indian totem pole, and views from the deck of the steamer of the mountains and glaciers along the Alaskan coast in Glacier Bay
