Summary expansion
The Youngs traveled to Mexico most likely as part of a group of American investors and businessmen involved in mining and railroad projects in Mexico. Young was vice-president of the Fraser Chalmers Company, one of the world's largest manufacturers of mining equipment, and some of his fellow travelers included Mr. L.L. Lamar, a railroad contractor whose company had built the rail line between San Marcos in the state of Puebla and the port of Tecotutla on the Gulf of Mexico; and Mr. V.M. Braschi, an authority on the Mexican railway system. The album is a typical souvenir album containing commercial photographs, with stock numbers, by Abel Briquet, and C.B. Waite, selected by the owner from the photographers' inventories. The album opens with a portrait by Waite of General Porfirio Diaz, president of Mexico, as it was customary for visiting groups of American businessmen and potential investors to meet with "Don Porfirio" and perhaps enjoy a banquet with local officials. There is also a portrait of an earlier Mexican president, the Zapotec Indian Benito Juárez. The most popular and well-known tourist sites are all represented in the album: the castle and park of Chapultepec, the Palacio Nacional, the cathedral, and the Paseo de la Reforma, the great central avenue running through Mexico City. Eight photos by Waite document the appearance by the Spanish bullfighter Luis Mazzantini in the ring in Mexico City in 1904. The Youngs visited the Mixtec ruins in Mitla, Oaxaca, as well as the Aztec antiquities in the Museo Nacional de Antropología, documented in the photos by Abel Briquet. Other photos include views of the Alameda park, the tomb of Juárez, the Viga Canal, one of the few canals remaining of the water transport system built by the Aztecs, which connects Xochimilco lake to the city; the volcanoes Ixtaccíhuatl and Popocatepetl; the American cemetery in Mexico City established in 1851 to provide burial space for those killed in the Mexican-American War, and for other Americans; and the shrine of Guadalupe north of the city in Tepeyac where Our Lady of Guadalupe is believed to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. The Youngs selected many photos of Mexican local color, such as a young woman making tortillas; flower vendors at the market near the Cathedral; pipe organ cactus and banana trees; peasants driving a wooden ox cart; a burro loaded with bulging pigskin sacks of pulque; a vendor selling colorful Mexican pottery; and a pair of "novios" dressed in typical Mexican dress, the man in his tall sombrero and elaborately embroidered mariachi costume. In addition to Mexico City views, there are photos of Queretaro, Pachuca, Mt. Orizaba from Chalchicomula, the Puebla cathedral, the Guanajuato catacombs, the interior and stage of the Teatro Juárez in that city, and the "Cartagena" in Tacubaya, one of the most luxurious "tivolis" or casinos in the area
