Summary expansion
The album opens with two printed maps: one traces a route from Halifax across Canada to Victoria, British Colombia; the second is a world map with route from Southampton to Newfoundland to Lake Louise, Victoria, Hawaii, and Suva (Fiji Islands) highlighted in red pencil. The first images are views of central Canada, dated July 1937, presumably the start of Lever's journey aboard the Canadian Pacific Railway train pictured in some of the photos. The following photos document the journey west across Canada, capturing the rugged scenery of the Canadian Rockies, views of Banff, its nearby lakes and rivers, a solitary bison, and pine forests, and mountains and glaciers in Lake Louise. In Morraine Lake, Lever visits a tea house and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. By July 14, he is at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, and photographs Diamond Head, and outrigger canoes on the beach near the hotel. He also visits offices of the Department of Agriculture in Hawaii, pictured in one of the photos. There are several snapshots of Lever and a companion, possibly his wife, and friends aboard the Orient Line SS Ormonde, a steamship which sailed the UK-Suez-Australia route, and the Monowai, which sailed the trans-Pacific route from North America. Lever reaches Fiji in early August: there is a photograph of his wife at Naitonitoni, and several of the journey through the jungle to Navua, documenting the tropical landscape and the Navua River. In one photo, a native man, Naduruloulou, is at work, plowing his field. In Mbengga, the travelers watch natives perform ceremonies in traditional attire and participate in fire walking. Other photos include native assistants "Jonah and Philip" standing front of the "insectary," the entomology office, heaps of tapioca root, and banana packing, Lever and assistants in front of a thatch cottage, and Philip crossing the river carrying Lever on his back, sailing in a dugout canoe, and arriving at the Suva wharf in January 1938. Throughout the album, Lever has added printed illustrations taken from travel pamphlets and other publications
