Summary expansion
The album opens with a view from the top of the Hotel Regis in Mexico City, a luxury hotel built in the Neo-Classical style in 1914 (and destroyed in the 1985 Mexico City earthquake). Several street views follow, capturing a parade and street market, street vendors, with additional views of the Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe and the cemetery there. One image shows a group of Mexicans boarding a train, with the caption "Second class passengers." Mrs. Johnson views the ruined monastery known as "El Desierto" in Desierto de los Leones, and visits the markets in the San Angel neighborhood. Her excursion to the Teotihuacán site inspires her to document the ruins with 30 photographs. She climbs the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, which are practically deserted, and photographs them from a distance, up close, in panorama, and from underground. She provides a very interesting perspective on Aztec archaeological ruins, capturing images from locations that are probably no longer accesssible to regular travelers today. She then proceeds to the ruins of Ciudadela, and then to Popocatépetl, where she and her party stay at Camp Tlamacas before ascending the volcano and taking photographs of the crater and other distant mountains. The travelers set off for Vera Cruz by rail, taking numerous shots of the countryside and stops along the route, including a block house and tunnel at Alta Luz, Mount Orizaba, mountain streams, bridges, the Rincon Grande Dam, Emperor Maximilian's home and church, canyons and the Metlac Bridge near Vera Cruz. The photo with caption "Jute Mill Foot Bridge" is probably a reference to the nearby Santa Gertrudis jute mill at Orizaba, which dramatically comes into view as the train approaches, always an object of curiosity to the passengers. She also includes photos of typical peasant dwellings. The album concludes with a shot from a bullfight in Vera Cruz
