Summary expansion
The album opens with the travellers' arriving in Alexandria by steamship, and scenes at the harbor. Visible in one of the street scenes of the city is the textile store of Pohoomull Brothers of India who, in the late 19th century, had set up stores in tourist areas throughout the Mediterranean, in countries such as Egypt, Gibraltar, and Malta. There are also photos of bazaars, cafes, and mosques. In Cairo, there is a view of the Thomas Cook travel office, next to Shepheards Hotel where the travellers are staying--a member of the party is photographed in the hotel garden. They visit the Egyptian Museum, the Giza Zoo and gardens, the Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha or the Alabaster Mosque located in the Citadel, the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan in the old city, and the old Gezira bridge with its lion statues. Views of the narrow streets of the city reveal throngs of passersby, horse carriages, donkeys, men carrying large trays of bread on their heads, and on the houses, wooden balconies enclosed with carved wooden screens, and carved wooden lattice shutters (mashrabiyya). Along the Nile, small sailboats or feluccas are moored. Of course there are photos of the Sphinx, and the pyramids at Giza, where the travellers pose on their camels, and shots of them sitting in the patio of their hotel. A sequence of photos show the caravan of loaded camels of a group of Bedouins; one of the lady travellers, approaches a young Bedouin on a donkey, camera in hand; another traveller poses in a Nile boat his large camera resting on his lap (see page [43]) . From Cairo, the travellers cruise down the Nile to Aswan aboard the "Germania," a sternwheel steamer operated by the Hamburg & Anglo-American Nile Company, visiting all the major tourist sites, such as Luxor, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon, Philae, and the Temple of Horus at Edfu. In Aswan, they stay at the Old Cataract Hotel, built in 1899 by Thomas Cook travel company for European travelers. The album concludes with photos of the Aswan [Low] Dam, completed by the British in 1902; and the resultant flooding of the Great Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel which appears almost completely submerged, only the capitals of its columns and the upper portion of the temple visible above the water
