Summary expansion
Of the 100 photographs, all but fourteen are amateur snapshots of traveling aboard a ship, with several views of the travelers on deck; and views of the landscapes and towns they visited in South Africa. The album begins with a view of Cape Town and the mountains beyond, approaching from the sea; the caption reads "Friedrich-Zimmer Haus." Other views of Cape Town include Rhodes Drive to Groote Schuur, the estate purchased by Cecil Rhodes in 1893; Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden; Table Mountain; De Waal Drive, Devil's Peak, and Cape Point. There are numerous photographs of a large group of family and/or friends camping in the countryside, and on the lakeshore, sleeping under a large tent, and cooking over an open fire. The mountains, rocky coasts, and beaches of Cape Town are visible in many of the photographs. In one photograph, a man stands outside in front of a prosperous home, holding a fawn in his arms. It seems likely that the travelers went to South Africa to visit family members or friends who had left Germany and settled in South Africa. The photographer has also captured some wonderful views of the local people: an African man, possibly a policeman or guard at one of the sites, wearing a large snake wrapped around his neck, and holding a handful of smaller snakes; views of the large round thatched huts of an African village; African women draped in printed cloth, holding young children; and an African man pushing a young German boy wearing a pith helmet in what looks like a handcar on rail tracks. The album contains seven stock photos, signed "J.V.," by the James Valentine studio, of views along the coast in the Cape Town area. Seven photographs of Durban are commercial stock photos, unsigned; the views of the Town Hall, Post Office, Town Gardens, West Street, the Club on the Esplanade, and Durban Bay portray Durban as a large beautiful modern European-style city. There are also two photographs of local "cabbies," or rickshaw pullers--two young Zulu men with animal horns on their head
