Summary expansion
Minor C. Keith first began cultivating bananas in Costa Rica in 1871, and by the 1880s had become the principal banana grower in Central America. The merger of his company with the Boston Fruit Company, the first company to import bananas to the United States, led to the creation of the United Fruit Company in 1899. UFCO was able to dominant the banana market by monopolizing not only the cultivation of the fruit, but also the transport, through the creation of the Northern Railway, part of which ran from San José to Puerto Limón, whose engines nos. 39 and 42 are pictured, and the Great White Fleet of steamers, including the S.S. Pastores and S.S. Atenas, painted white to reflect the heat and aid cooling of the cargo, also pictured. The album may have belonged to an employee or manager of United Fruit Company, based in Costa Rica. Since some of the photos also appear in other albums, it's possible that the Company had the photos taken for use in compiling albums as gifts for employees or visitors. Included are views of workers-- the company brought in Jamaican migrant workers initially--felling timber and clearing out forests in the land along the railway, which made shipping the fruit to market much easier; in most of the photos, the railroad tracks running along the fields are omnipresent. There are also views of workers standing amidst the towering groves of banana trees, planting banana cuttings, harvesting bananas using large machetes, loading bananas onto mules under the watchful eye of white overseers; and putting them on freight cars for transport to the port of San José. On the docks, baskets of bananas are loaded by conveyor belt onto UFCO steamers. Several photographs document the life of the families of the managers and overseers: in one, a manager stands with his dog in front of temporary housing---a wooden hut with a thatch roof, while in others, managers' modern residences situated along winding tree-lined paved streets, are pictured, with electrical towers in the background, as well as a club house and tennis court. Other views portray two American women and a young boy buying milk from a local boy mounted on his pony; and the same two women with a group of children in an oxcart led by a local peasant. Toward the end of the album, several photographs document the damage to fields, bridges, and roads by hurricanes and floods. Other photographs include a group of Talamancan Indians fishing; Jamaican workers shelling beans from cacao pods; and a field on a pineapple plantation, two other crops cultivated by UFCO
