Summary expansion
Several photographs show towns--San Luis Obispo, and possibly Riverside or Redlands, California-- in the early stages of their settlement, revealing scattered homes among broad agricultural fields, orchards, and vineyards, with mountains in the background. There is also a view of Redlands from the Terrace Villa Hotel, the first hotel in the city, then called Lugonia, built in 1886 by D.L. Clark, and a view of the Du Bois Residence, "Casa Blanca", in Riverside, signed "Parker Photo" by J.C. Parker. Other photos, possibly taken in or near these towns, include shots of a wide tree-lined avenue, still unpaved; a large Italianate house on lush grounds, a rose-covered cottage, women and child standing on a bridge over a canal, men fishing in a rocky pond, two ladies on a rocky hillside overlooking a waterfall, horses and buggies on the beach, and a rocky coastline. Agricultural photographs focus on cultivation of oranges, grapes, and calla lilies; one photo shows two Chinese field workers drying grapes in a vineyard. Photographs of San Diego include views of San Diego Bay, San Diego Mission with adobe fence and palms in foreground, and Hotel Del Coronado, one signed "Coonley Photo." Other mission photographs include views of Santa Barbara Mission, San Juan Capistrano, and San Luis Rey Mission. Five photographs--three signed "Parker Photo"--Depict Native Americans: bare-breasted Moqui, or Hopi, women in Winslow, Arizona; Pueblo women from Isleta, carrying pots on their heads, and Mojave women in Needles, Calif.; an unidentified Indian family "at home" in a wretched shelter of poles and blankets; and an old Indian wood carrier, a heavy bundle of sticks tied to his back
