Album of large sepia albumen photographs of views of South African cities, and the islands of St. Helena and Madeira.
Biographical or historical data
Robert Harris was a commercial photographer active in South Africa; he maintained a studio in Port Elizabeth between 1880 and 1890. He published two photo books: Photographic views of Port Elizabeth and neighbourhood in 1876; and Photographic album of South African scenery sometime between 1880 and 1886. His album, South Africa: illustrated by a series of one hundred and four permanent photographs was published in Port Elizabeth in 1888. His photographs, which include views of urbanization in the developing cities and towns, and diamond mining in Kimberley, present an image of South Africa at a transformative moment for its economy and society. For additional information, see A.D. Bensusan, "19th century photographers in South Africa," Africana notes and news 15, no. 6 (1963): 219-252.

Summary expansion
The album opens with two photographs of the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean, the site of Napoleon Bonaparte's second exile and his death in 1821: one is a view of the harbor; the other, Napoleon's tomb in a small churchyard cemetery. The developing city of Cape Town in Western Cape is represented by the next seven photographs, depicting Table Bay harbor which Cape Town overlooks, the shops and houses lining Adderley and St. George's Street (which remain unpaved); the Neoclassical buildings of Parliament House (completed 1884), and the Library and Museum building; the tree-lined boulevard known as The Avenue; and Table Mountain from the suburb of Rondebosch. The town of Port Elizabeth, in East Cape, was a thriving port town, as seen in scenes of Jetty Street, leading to the harbor; Main Street, with its trolley tracks visible, and the lines of its imposing businesses and shops culminating in the City Hall building with its domed clock tower. Also included are scenes of the morning market--a cattle market offering pairs of yoked oxen, and vendors selling their wares from their wagons--and the indoor feather market and auction, where merchants examine and bid on ostrich and other types of exotic feathers laid out on long tables. "The Hill" was the area above town where prosperous merchants built their country villas, an area of handsome houses and well-built churches, including the Hill Presbysterian Church at the right of the photograph. "The Vlei" was a natural drainage point or reservoir, used to provide water for animals and clay for road construction. In 1883 the vlei was drained--probably as a response to the wealthy people who were moving into the area--and a decorative iron railing, visible in the photograph, was installed to beautify the area. Other Port Elizabeth photos include a view of the beach at North End, where spectators appear to be viewing a beach whale; and Red House, a boating station on the Swartzkops River. There are also photos of the towns of Uitenhage, Grahamstown, Somerset East, and Cradock, where the photographer has captured the Cradock Bridge over the Fish River, the high-steepled Dutch Reformed "Mother" Church (modeled after St Martin-in-the-Field Church in Trafalgar Square, London), and another public building, possibly the Cradock municipal hall. In "Van Staadens Pass", a passage through the gorge of the Van Staadens River between Port Elizabeth and Humansdorp, three men stand beside a large wagon of wood drawn by a team of oxen; another photo from the Van Staadens area shows four members of a party of picnickers perched among the branches of a large baobab tree. The album closes with a view of the island of Madeira
