Summary expansion
The album contains numerous photos of natural landscapes, including mountains, possibly the San Jacinto Mountains and Palomar Mountain; forests, possibly tall pine and incense cedar of Southern California, or the sequoia and redwood of Northern California; a river (the San Diego River, or San Luis Rey River?), and plains. There are shots of the town of Pala, California, and the Pala Indian Reservation, as seen in the opening panoramic photo (15 x 59 cm), as well as the historic Mission San Antonio de Pala, with its freestanding bell tower with two bells (later destroyed in a flood in 1916). Also included is a view of another mission, Mission San Juan Capistrano, located 35 miles further north. Several photos document scenes in the town or perhaps at the mission, including a group of local people, some of the surveyors (recognizable by their hats), and Pala Indians gathering to watch a tribal dance. The surveyors may have been employees of the Cuyamaca Water Company, formerly the San Diego Flume Company, owned by Colonel Ed Fletcher and Montana businessman James A. Murray between 1910 and 1926. The Cuyamaca Water Company improved the existing flume system and expanded delivery of water to communities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and East San Diego. The album contains numerous photos of the wooden flume snaking through the countryside, and across trestles, as well as concrete reservoirs, wells, windmills, and pumping stations. In some photos, construction crews appear to be digging new channels, and constructing wooden framework, and laying pipe for transporting water. Throughout the album are views of the surveyors' camp; surveying instruments--measuring poles and tripods--stand outside the tents. A shot of tents covered in snow is dated December 1914. A portrait of seven young men and women on horseback, most of them wearing surveyors' hats, suggests that women may also have worked as surveyors. The album concludes with a view of the Arroyo Seco in near Pasadena, as well as several urban views, possibly early views of the city of San Diego, or Los Angeles, including a beachfront hotel, with a long wooden pier; and a city street, with one building advertising the "Hotel Alhambra & Apts. The residential street of Craftsman bungalows has been identified by a sign in the photo as Cimarron Street, in the St. Vincent Extension, added in 1909 to the College Tract, a bungalow tract built by the Los Angeles Investment Company (LAIC) in Los Angeles in 1907/1908 between Vernon Ave. and 52nd St. and Granmercy and Western Avenues
