Summary expansion
The album opens with a photo of two young couples relaxing on Mission Bay Beach in Auckland, suggesting that the pictures document their visits to many of New Zealand's natural wonders, mountains, lakes, and resorts. The inscription on the back of the photo, dated Sept. 3, 1938, identifies the group as "Dick Hood, Aileen, Jess & I" all from the Mansions Boarding House in Auckland; Dick and Aileen appear in other photographs in the album. Many of the photos depict New Zealand's geothermal pools, geysers, and hot waterfalls in Waimangu and in particular Tikitere (also known as "Hell's Gate). Two of these photos--"Devils Pool" and "Garden of Eden" taken at Tikitere--signed "Iles' Photo," are images by New Zealand photographer Arthur James Iles. There are several photos from the Maori village of Ohinemutu, including the Tudor-style St. Faith's Church, and an elaborately carved food store, as well as photos of New Zealand mountain peaks in the Southern Alps such as Mount Giant, Mitre Peak, the Lion, Mount Pembroke, and Mount Ruapehu, and the volcano Mount Ngauruhoe. The photographer has also captured various views of Milford Sound, Lake Matheson, and Franz Josef Glacier. The large geothermally heated pool at Blue Baths, an Art Deco venue in Rotorua that opened in 1933, is featured in one photograph. Other photos of a hot springs resort are captioned "Morere," as are numerous photographs depicting family members at home, and at work on a sheep ranch. Also pictured are views of Auckland, Nelson, and Waikokopu, site of a railroad tunnel (completed in 1937 according to a plaque visible in the photo) on the Napier-Wairoa line. The album closes with several shots of koala bears, taken in Badger Creek, Victoria, Australia. Of special interest are two photos of Maori customs: the first is captioned "Feeding the tohunga," a reference to the spiritual powers of the tohunga--priest or "chosen one"--which were so great that the tohunga was forbidden to touch earthly food, and had to be fed with food placed on a stick and put in his mouth. The second image shows Maori women weaving a "korowai" or traditional feather cloak
