Summary expansion
In 1936 the British Royal Air Force established a station at Habbaniya, west of Baghdad, during the break in hostilities following the Anglo-Iraqi treaty of 1930, and the photographs present an extraordinarily detailed view of the RAF experience of LAC (Leading Aircraftman) Carlile in the region, from the streets of Baghdad to a tour of Kurdistan. The album begins with the departure of his ship "Dorsetshire" from Southampton, the arrival at Port Said on April 1, 1936, and passage through the Suez Canal. Subjects of the photos include Arrival at Port Said ("First Glimpse of Egypt"); Suez Canal; views from the ship of Shatt-al-Arab, Iraq; train journey from Basra to Baghdad; the Garifiya town gate and people of Mahmudiyah; local transport including camels, ox carts, and caravans; wildlife and pets such as honey bear, snakes, pelican, rabbits, caterpillars, and scorpion; the great archway of Ctesiphon (Taq Kasra), all that remains of what was once one of the great cities of ancient Mesopotamia; desert maneuvers with No. 1 Armoured Car Company; main street of Diyala; an 8-day trip to Kurdistan in August 1936, with views of Rowanduz Gorge, villages of Diana, Jindhan, Erbil, and Deltawa; portraits of Kurds; an armoured car race; comrades from the motor pool and engine shop; Bedouins; and the desert in the rain

  • Photographs are mounted on rectos and versos of 24 leaves of black mounting paper, interspersed with tissue guard leaves; photos are mounted 4, 5, 6, or 7 to a page, with hand-written captions below in white ink in a calligraphic style; most pages are embellished with cleverly sketched drawings illustrating the people and landscape, such as flying fish, palms, camels, city views, Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, river and ocean scenery, fishermen and duck hunters, and the Company's armoured cars on desert maneuvers. These drawings enhance the artfully arranged photographs, giving the impression that Carlile was very interested in the culture and natural features of the area
  • Bound in a commercial photograph album of well-worn patterned purple cloth over paper boards, and tied with a black cord threaded through two pairs of black grommets along left edges; gold-stamped cover title "Photo Graphs" in block letters.
