- Summary expansion
- The boundaries of the Southern Territories were created in 1902, and encompassed the entire Algerian Sahara and part of the northern Algerian highlands. The Southern Territories, divided into four sub-territories of Aïn Sefra, Ghardaïa, Touggourt, and Oasis, was administered by a civil governor-general, and maintained by the French 19e Corps d'Armee. The album opens with two portraits of French soldiers of the native Algerian military regiments--"Colombier," brigadier of the 1st Spahi cavalry regiment, and "Guillé," corporal of the 1st Turcos (or Tirailleur) infantry regiment. The next fifty photos depict the French garrison in El Golea (modern El Menia), the southern gateway to the Sahara. Included are views of officers' quarters, the infirmary, administration building, post office, barracks of tirailleurs, "bureau arabe," scenes of a courier's arrival to the post, and a ceremony awarding "Lieutenant Sadey" with a medal. There are also group portraits of native infantrymen and French officers in native costumes, and native cavalrymen dressed for a Bastille Day (July 14) celebration. In El Golea, the photographer has captured four scenes of drilling wells for water near the springs that create the oasis of the area, as well as general and street views of El Golea, photos of the El Golea market, church, house of Commandant Lamy, a nearby salt lake, and an ancient "skar," or Berber hill fortification. Scenes of local people, life and customs include groups of local children, spahi cavalrymen with local women, goat herders, and a nomadic family. Four photos show different stages of loading and mounting a camel. Tipped in on the inside back cover of the album is a composite panoramic photo of a residence, possibly the compiler's home back in France, decorated with checked gingham window curtains and arched trellises of climbing flowers. A series of 11 photos document a trip to Fort Macmahon (Hassi el Homeur), 170 kilometers west of El Golea, one of the largest and most remote French forts in the Sahara, built in 1894. The images follow the party's movement through the desert, stops at wells on the way, making tents, Fort Macmahon from the distance, and its entrance. Of special interest are two portraits of French officers in native dress posing in front of the stone plaque marking distances from the fort to various other locations in Algeria. There are also interesting views and panoramas of the cities of Ghardaia, Laghouat, and Bogharie, including local villagers, markets, and military barracks. Laid in are 11 miscellaneous photographs, including two large cabinet cards. Four of the photos are portraits of French army officers; others include a view of a group of officers posed in front of a local bar; and a portrait of the family of the probable owner of the album captioned "René Guillé--pere, mere, soeur." Also included among the laid-in photos are family photos (including a tintype), a view of the compiler's father [?] sitting outside the family home in France (printed on Velox paper), and 2 large photos (17.5 x 23.5 cm) of a field of beehives, probably located on the compiler's family farm in France
