Summary expansion
The photographer was apparently a companion of French traveler Dr. Lucien Morisse who more than once visited the region of Upper Orinoco in the 1900s investigating local populations of hevea trees which were used in the production of natural rubber, or caoutchouc. The present album is apparently a record of his subsequent travels to the area. Included in the album are a leaf from a notepad laid in, bearing letterhead of Docteur L. Morisse of Chatou, France, and several photos of Dr. Morisse, including one of him in pith helmet with rifle captioned "Dr. Morisse." The group visited towns and locales along the Orinoco in eastern Venezuela, as well as Port of Spain, Trinidad, where many steamships docked; San Fernando on the Río Apure, where the travelers enjoy a cruise in the sailboat "La Francia;" Ciudad Bolívar, center of the Orinoco River trade, and balata trees in Picoa. Views of Ciudad Bolívar include several good images of the Paseo Orinoco promenade, steamers moored nearby and locals strolling around. There are also many photos of the steamships and river steamers that transported passengers to these cities: "Guarico," which operated between Maracaibo and Ciudad Boĺvar; and the river steamers "Apure," operating between Ciudad Bolívar and San Fernando de Apure; "Arauca," and "Alianza" operating from Ciudad Bolívar up the Orinoco; and "Delta," operating between Ciudad Bolívar and Port of Spain, Trinidad. A series of fourteen photos of remote jungle, rivers, rocky coasts, and muddy rough highways attest to the difficulty of overland travel in this area; travelers make their way by automobile--there are numerous photos of it being pulled by men and horses out of deep water and mud; dugout canoe, log raft, and on mule or horseback. Photos labeled "Carrizal" depict native workers in front of the palm-leaf huts where they are housed, panning for gold using shallow tin pans or a "long-tom" sluice box, and operating a crude wooden mill necessary for working the ore deposit. Once in the rubber forests, there are views of rubber tappers climbing the tall rubber trees to score them with V-shaped cuts and release the latex which runs into collecting cups. There are also photos of a worker pouring the collected latex into a pan for further processing, and collecting latex that has been coagulated in a pit in the ground. Also included is a photograph of the tools and instruments used by a rubber worker. There are photographs of local Indians, including a group portrait of members of the "Guaiuco" tribe; in one photo taken "sur la Caroni" and dated April 1925, Indians (one with feather headress) paddle their dugouts on the Caroni River
