- Summary expansion
- O'Neill worked at the 50-bed hospital that had been built by the 84th Battalion Seabees in July 1943 when they built a permanent camp at Milne Bay, along with housing and recreational facilities. The Navy Nurse Corps served with the 15th Special Battalion, and operated the hospital until July 1945 when it was dismantled and moved to bases in the Philippines. The album opens with a large photo of the troop ship which delivered O'Neill and her fellow nurses and other personnel to New Guinea, followed by images of war casualties being treated, surgical operating rooms, the nurses driving around in their jeep (the "Witch Wagon"), and recreational facilities on the base. Of special interest are several photos of Carole Landis and Martha Tilton performing for the Stars and Stripes tour with Jack Benny through New Guinea in 1944 in order to raise troop morale. Landis was a very popular young star at the time, and worked tirelessly for the Naval Aid Auxiliary, visiting hundreds of military bases during the War. Also included is a photo of the B-24D-50-CO "Frenisi" with the nose cone pin-up cover art of a woman wearing only a sombrero, scarf, and high heels. The bomber flew a total of 104 combat missions with no fatalities, and was retired by July 4, 1944. Over 40 images are pictures of the Papuan villagers in native dress who lived near the base during the War. O'Neill enlisted in Long Beach, California, and according to Navy Corps records, served until July 1945
