Summary expansion
The album, possibly compiled by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sturgis, (Mrs. Sturgis is identified in several photos as "J.S."), opens with snapshots of Pier 34 in San Francisco's harbor, and the city's receding skyline as the oceanliner heads for the open seas on Jan. 23, 1932, reaching Honolulu on Jan. 28th. A real photo postcard depicts crowds on the wharf waving goodbye at sailing time to the passengers lining the ship's decks and throwing streamers. In Hawaii, the travelers spent time sightseeing on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii; one photo shows the small Inter -Island Airways plane they took to fly to the "Big Island" of Hawaii on Feb. 2nd, covering "230 miles in 2 1/2 hours," and there are also shots of the smoking Kilauea crater on the island. In Honolulu, the travelers stay at the luxury hotel, the Halekulani, whose rooms, lanais, beach and dining room are documented in several photos. There are also photos of the residence of Lester McCoy, the house and grounds of George Carter, who served as the second territorial governor of Hawaii between 1903 and 1907; the Japanese gardens of a Mrs. Adams; Rear Admiral George T. Pettingill bedecked in leis; a view from an outrigger canoe of the Royal Hawaiian and the Moana Surfrider, the two first hotels in Waikiki; the Laie Hawaii Temple on Oahu, the first Mormon temple built outside of the contiguous United States; and the volcanic cone of Diamond Head from Waikiki Beach. The album includes many photos of friends and fellow travelers of the photographer, both in Hawaii and on board the ship, and 19 tinted real photo postcards of Hawaiian sights such as a ponciana tree, hula girls in grass skirts playing ukuleles, surf riders at Waikiki, natives climbing coconut palm trees, girls selling leis, a Hawaiian girl eating poi with her fingers, a pineapple field, and Aloha Tower in Honolulu. Enroute to Samoa and Fiji aboard the SS Mariposa, another of Matson's luxury liners, the photographer records the Neptune's Birthday festivities as they cross the equator, and passengers in the ship's swimming pool. They arrive in Pago Pago (Samoa) on Feb. 13, and continue on to Suva, capital of Fiji. Photos from this portion of the trip include views of a Fijian chief, Ratu Popè (grandson of Cakobau, the last king of Fiji), and a typical native thatch hut. The travelers also view a dance by Fijian warriors in full costume, and observe the "fire-walkers," men from various villages who walk across a large pit filled with hot smoldering stones. The album contains 14 printed postcards of native Fijians, Fijian women in meke dress, Fijians making "vangona" (or "kava"), a popular drink made by grinding the root of the kava pepper plant, a village of thatch huts in Suva, and a Fijian canoe with a large triangular sail. Closing the album are two photos taken from the ship--the SS City of Los Angeles pictured on the rear pastedown?--as it leaves the harbor in Sydney (Australia), showing the city skyline, and the small pilot boat returning to the harbor after helping to guide the ocean liner out to sea
