Summary expansion
The photographer, who may have been a British businessman or scientist traveling on business, or simply a British tourist, traveled along the Magdalena River aboard a sternwheeler, the mail steamer "America." The views he captures along the way include the "America" towing cattle on barges down the Magdalena, passing wood stations along the way, where steamers can conveniently stop to take on wood from the huge stacks piled at intervals along the shore; and women washing in the river, the long dugout canoes of the natives moored along the shore nearby. In one photo, a group of [English?] men in straw hats and white suits watch a local woman salting fish. In Cartagena, photos depict small naked children playing or peering from doorways, and groups of soldiers armed with rifles marching through the streets. Stucco buildings of three stories line the city streets, colonnades at street level, wooden balconies and porches on the front of the upper stories. In another photo, a group of locals in their dugouts offer conch shells, large branches of coral, and parrots for sale. The photographer has also included interior views of his rooms in South America, and in London, in both of which rows of framed family photos are prominently displayed. The photographer was also quite taken with the outdoor market in Bogotá, a jumble of women in straw hats sitting by their wares--boxes of buttons and trinkets; heaps of fruits and vegetables such as pineapples, pumpkins, and yams; piles of folded textiles; wooden birdcages; and woven baskets strung on poles. Throngs of people gather in the plaza in front of the church, perhaps following a Sunday mass; in another photo a sedan chair, with a curtained window, sits alone in the street, its occupant perhaps having entered the church or one of the shops. A man walks a spotted peccary on a leash. Throughout the album, the poverty of the local people is apparent, as they endure a life of hard labor, bend under the weight of the heavy bundles they carry on their backs, fill their jugs from a communal well, and beg for alms in the street
