Summary expansion
O'Keefe served in U.S. Army Company E, 182nd Infantry, and while in Fiji worked at the 18th General Hospital, staffed by members of the U.S. Army Medical Corps from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. There is a photo of O'Keefe himself, "Jack and Ward 10, 18th Gen. Hosp." and one of Percy Cass, "ward boy" on Ward 10. O'Keefe has also included photos of some of the Army nurses with whom he worked: 2nd Lt. Marion Lowe, 2nd Lt. Heldy, and 2nd Lt. Pauline Riely (Reilly?) and 2nd Lt. Ruth Atkins of the 7th Evacuation Hospital. Most of the amateur snapshots are of Fijian women, in traditional dress, and there are also photos of Fijians engaged in fishing from a canoe, poling a bamboo and straw houseboat, preparing kava, performing traditional dances, and swimming. Most trains on Fiji, almost all built by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, were used to move cut sugarcane to crushing mills, and one photo depicts large bundles of cane by the tracks awaiting transport. In exchange for government permission to lay down rails, Colonial Sugar also operated several free passenger trains that ran from Lautoka to 'Mba (in the album the photographer refers to it as "Ba") and from Lautoka to Singatoka. Several photos show these "free trains," consisting of coaches of typical Anglo-lndian style with covered tops and open sides, pulled by a Hudswell Clarke 4-4-0 locomotive built specially for these trains
