Summary
Third Giunta pontifical (following the first and second of 1510 and 1520), containing the order of service, with music, for those sacraments administered exclusively by popes or bishops. The first section covers the ordination, consecration, and blessing of people such as clergy, deacons, abbots and abbesses. The second section deals with the consecration and blessing of property, including church buildings, altars, liturgical objects, such as bells, chalices, and crosses, and the blessing of holy oil. The final section contains rules governing ceremonies of synods and other pontifical events throughout the church year. This edition contains, for the first time, the changes and amendations instituted by Pope Paul III, known as the first Catholic reformer on the throne of St. Peter's. He convoked in 1537 a "concilium de emendanda Ecclesia" which affected also the Church liturgy

Spec. Coll. copy: bound in 19th-century tan leather; gilt filets enclosing a thin ornamental border; small corner floral ornaments; gilt starburst ornaments in spine panels; gold-stamped spine title "Pontificale Romanum;" gilt roll on edges of both boards in a chain pattern; green silk ribbon marker. This binding is generally associated with the library of Count Gaetano Melzi, the bibliophile and author of important bibliographies, who had no bookplate of his own; Melzi's library passed by inheritance to the Marchese Camillo di Soragna, and in the 1920s, it was acquired and dispersed by Tammaro de Marinis. Early ownership inscription at head of title page, "Geor. Cicestr." ("Georgius Cicestrensis"), probably George Day, a Catholic bishop of Chicester, England consecrated in 1543. Purchase, William H. Schab Gallery, 1989.
