- Summary expansion
- The set, containing a total of 383 woodcut illustrations, represents one of the first comprehensive iconographies of Rome, which, as Amy Marshall notes in her exhibit catalog, "Mirabilia urbis Romae: five centuries of guidebooks and views" (Univ. of Toronto Library, 2002), reflected the changes to the city undertaken by Sixtus V in the years 1585-90." The tiny 16mo format was easily carried by travelers, including pilgrims, tourists, diplomats, merchants, architects, and artists. The guidebooks were also used as tourist albums. Upon returning home, the traveler could flip through the volumes, showing friends and family which of the sights he had visited. Because the woodcuts were printed only on the rectos of each page, there was room for the traveler to add his own drawings, notes, or observations. The "Palatia procerum Romanae vrbis" volume includes 95 woodcuts principally of facades of Roman palaces. See also Ashby, T. "Note sulle varie guide di Roma che contengono xilografie di Girolamo Franzini," Roma I (1923):345-352
