- Gloria Werner was born and raised in Seattle, Wash. and graduated from Franklin High at age 16; she attended Oberlin College in Ohio and received her B.A. in French in 1961. She returned to Seattle to attend U. Wash. to study librarianship and received her M.L. from there in 1961. She was chosen by Louise Darling to participate in the UCLA Biomedical ("Biomed") Library's innovative Graduate Training Program in Medical Librarianship from Sept. 1962-Aug. 1963. Upon completion of that program, she began working at Biomed, starting out as a reference librarian, working her way through the ranks to become the head of the Biomedical Library (1979-1983) after Louise Darling's retirement. Werner moved to the Research Library in 1983, where she worked her way through the administrative ranks to become the University Librarian (1989-2002). In her career she was involved with library and university service, was active in professional organizations and lectured, published and did some consulting. She retired from the UCLA Library in 2002.
