Biographical or historical data
Steven E. Smith was born in 1937 and graduated from California State University, Los Angeles in 1960. He began his political career in 1961 as a consultant to Assemblyman Charles H. Wilson. Smith served as chief executive officer for the Assembly Rules Committee, was appointed the first administrative officer of the California State Assembly, and was chief staff person for the 1965 reapportionment. He also served as campaign manager for Mervyn Dymally in the 1973 lieutenant governor's race. Following graduation from the Whittier College School of Law in 1977, he became an attorney at law in 1978, and in 1983 became a Judge Pro Tem in the Los Angeles Municipal Court.
