Biographical or historical data
Richard A. Santillán was born in Los Angeles in 1947. He graduated in 1970 with a B.A. in philosophy and in 1972 with a B.A. in Chicano Studies from California State University, Los Angeles. He received an M.A. from California State University, Northridge in 1975, and a Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School in 1978. In 1981, as director of the Chicano Reapportionment Project, Rose Institute of State and Local Government, Claremont, California, he organized a series of conferences which culminated in the creation of Californios for Fair Representation, one of the most well-organized groups addressing reapportionment with respect to the Chicano community in California. Aside from his many years as a college professor, he has been a longtime activist and advocate in the Mexican American community of California, having been a member of the United Mexican American Students (UMAS), the Movimiento Estudiantíl Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA), the United Farmworkers movement, and La Raza Unida Party. He has written extensively on reapportionment in the state and how it has affected the Mexican American community.
