Marian Bergeson was born on August 31, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Utah. After being active in the education field she became involved in politics. From 1978 to 1984 she served in the California State Assembly for the Seventy-fourth Assembly district. Then from 1985-1994 she served as senator for the Thirty-seventh Senate District, becoming the first of two women Republican senators to be elected in California. Afterwards she was a supervisor for Orange County. From 1996 to 1998 she served as secretary of child development and education and from 1998 to 2001 she was a member of the California State Board of Education. She was involved in education reform such as class size reduction, academic content standards for each grade level, and a system of assessment and accountability.
