Biographical or historical data
  • Lawrence E. Walsh began his political career in Huntington Park, California where he was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission, was elected to the City Council in 1962, and became mayor in 1965. In 1966 he was elected to the California Senate from the newly-created Thirtieth Senatorial District. Mr. Walsh served eight years in the State Senate where he sponsored legislation to repeal the Rumford Fair Housing Act, to reallocate gasoline by funds between northern and southern California, to modify the business inventory tax, and
  • to provide sound barriers, protective screens, and cement dividers on freeways. While in the senate he served as Chairman of the Transportation Committee and Vice Chairman of the Business and Professions Committee. In the 1972 redistricting of the senate, Walsh's district was eliminated. In 1974 Walsh ran for the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor, but was defeated in the primary by Mervyn Dymally. After 1974 Walsh returned to private life, occasionally serving as a lobbyist in Sacramento.
