Margolis discusses growing up in San Diego County, high school and college education, war time experiences, postwar duty in Germany, returning to UCLA, and his beginning political activities. He continues with his work as a labor organizer, being hired on the Ways and Means Committee staff, changes in the legislature, legislative reform, the rift between Jesse Unruh and Gov. Pat Brown, nomination of Unruh as chairman of Ways and Means, the role of the California Democratic Council, and dealing with the press. Biographical or historical data
Larry Margolis was born in Los Angeles on Oct. 7, 1923. He received a B.A. in political science from UCLA in 1951 and attended McGeorge College of Law in Sacramento for one year. He was the staff director for the California Assembly Ways and Means Committee (1960-61), chief assistant to Speaker Jesse Unruh (1961-1965), executive director of the Citizens Conference on State Legislatures (1967-1978), and President of Legis 50/The Center for Legislative Improvement (1978-79). From 1981-86, he was the advisor and policy coordinator for the State Treasurer, executive secretary of the California Passenger Rail Financing Commission, and executive secretary for the Pooled Money Investment Board. In 1986, he was the senior vice-president of Public Finance for Dean Witter Reynolds and in 1987 became a public finance consultant. He has served as a political consultant and lecturer and is the author of numerous papers.
