- In 1961 Governor Edmund G. Brown, Sr. named John F. (Jack) Burby his press secretary. Burby held that position until 1967. Previously a journalist for the Hawaii bureau of United Press, the "Honolulu Advertiser," and the "San Francisco Chronicle," Burby went on to edit and publish the "National Journal" (Washington, D.C.) from 1970 to 1974. In 1978, he became a staff writer for the "Los Angeles Times" and, in 1983, was named assistant editor of the editorial pages. He is the author of the book, "The Great American Motion Sickness" (1971)
