Summary
This interview deals with Stanford Shaw's two terms in the state assembly (1951-54) and his service in the state senate (1957-61). He discusses the nature of the assembly in the early 1950s: Speaker Sam Collins, lobbyist Arthur Samish, use of spot bills, impact of the Korean War, early concerns over smog, issues addressed in his bills. His senate service centered on his obtaining a state college for his county, the State Water Plan, and leadership in the senate.   • Stanford C. Shaw, a practicing attorney, was elected to the California State Assembly in 1950 to represent the Seventy-Second District. His principal committee service during his two terms was: Agriculture, Judiciary, and Public Health. He sponsored legislation to create the California Law Revision Commission. In 1954, he decided to return to his law practice. In 1957, on the retirement of State Senator James E. Cunningham, Sr., Mr. Shaw won a special election for the Thirty-Sixth Senate District for San Bernardino County. Mr. Shaw's major achievement during his one term in the senate was the establishing of a state college in San Bernardino County. For health reasons, Mr. Shaw retired from state politics in 1961
