Biographical or historical data
Gladys Sargent was born in 1899 in San Francisco, but has lived most of her life in Oakland, Calif. In 1946 she founded Pets & Pals, an organization to befriend homeless animals. In the early 1950's she began to lobby on behalf of animals in the California legislature. After many successes in legislation, including bills ensuring humane slaughter of animals, a bill to outlaw the use of steel traps in killing bears, a bill preventing dog racing in California, and bills to outlaw "puppy mills" and to regulate pet shops, Gladys has become a beloved figure at the Capitol. Her unusual tactics of lobbying, as well as her friendships with and access to legislators, have made her an outstanding lobbyist.
