Frederick (Fred) S. Farr was born in 1910 in Piedmont, Calif. where he received his early education; he graduated from UC Berkeley in 1932 and received his law degree there in 1935. In 1955, following many years as an attorney in San Francisco and Monterey, he was elected to the California State Senate from Monterey County, and was the first Democrat to represent Monterey County in 43 years. Following his defeat in 1967, he served for 2 years in the Lyndon Johnson Administration as national coordinator for highway beautification; he was also a member of the California Coastal Zone Conservation Commission (1972-79) and president of the California Historical Society (1974-76).
