Biographical or historical data
Daniel H. Lowenstein after having served as an advocacy attorney from 1968-1971 for California Rural Legal Assistance was appointed Deputy Secretaty of State by Secretary of State Edmund G. Brown, Jr. Lowenstein was the principal author of Proposition 9, the Political Reform act of 1974, which became effective January 1, 1975. When Brown became governor in 1975 he appointed Lowenstein to be the first chairman of the five-member Fair Political Practices Commission, created by Proposition 9. Since 1979 Lowenstein has been on the faculty of the School of Law, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
