Biographical or historical data
After a childhood in Louisiana and Colorado, Augustus F. Hawkins settled with his family in Los Angeles, CA. In 1931, he graduated from UCLA with a degree in economics. He entered the California State Assembly in 1935 and served continuously until 1962. He was a member of the California State Assembly (Sixty-second District) from 1935-1962 and was chair of various committees. He was a member of the United States Congress, House of Representatives (Twenty-first District of California) from 1962-1991, and of the (Twenty-ninth District of California) from 1974-1981. He is the founder, director of the Hawkins's Family Memorial Foundation for Educational Research and Development from 1969 to the present. He has received many honorary Ph.D.degrees from various national academic institutions.
