Summary expansion
In his dedicatory letter to Duke Cesare Borgia, Soncino accuses fellow printer Aldus Manutius of taking credit for the invention of italic type, which Soncino claims had been designed by Francesco Griffo of Bologna. In fact, Griffo had designed and cut the italic type used by Aldus in his 1501 octavo edition of Virgil, the first book printed in that type; and from the beginning, Aldus had credited Griffo with the type design. However, perhaps Griffo was not satisfied with the financial or even artistic result of his first italic typeface designed for Aldus, and in his subsequent association with Soncino, he produced an even better, clearer, slightly larger, and more beautiful italic type, with which the present Petrarch is printed. Malcom Lowry calls it one of the real masterpieces of Italian printing art; see The world of Aldus Manutius (Oxford, 1979), p. 88-90. Although the Soncino Petrarch may claim superiority for the beauty of its typeface, the Aldine Petrarch surpasses it for its correctness of text, having been edited by the great scholar Pietro Bembo; see D. Amram, The makers of Hebrew books in Italy (London: Holland Press, 1963), p. 95-103
