Summary expansion
The photographs were no doubt made during the early 1920s when Clarke was traveling extensively in Europe as representative of the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Company. The Company published a three-volume set of halftone prints of Clarke's photographs of cottages and other minor English domestic structures in Los Angeles in 1923-1925, with accompanying text. The two portfolios may have simply served as albums in which Clarke collected his English photographs, or perhaps they were assembled as "mock-ups" in preparation for the publication of the halftone volumes
