Summary expansion
This new kind of anthology was inaugurated by Paolo Manuzio in 1542 with Lettere volgari di diversi nobilissimi huomini. Two years later, Paolo Gherardo, a Venetian editor, issued the present collaboration with Lodovico Dolce, who contributed five letters of his own and probably gave Gherardo several letters of other authors. As in Manuzio's anthologies, one of the most interesting aspects of this collection lies in its close connection with the Italian religious movement called Evangelism; many of the major figures of the religious dissent like Marco Antonio Flaminio, Giovanni Matteo Giberti, Francesco Porto, Pier Paolo Vergerio, and Marguerite de Navarre are each represented by at least one letter; see A. Jacobson Schutte, "The 'Lettere volgari' and the crisis of Evangelism in Italy," Renaissance quarterly 28, no. 4 (1975):639-688
