Summary expansion
Recipes, written in black ink two or three to a page, include recipes for different kinds of fruit liqueurs (plum, apple, and pineapple); other liqueurs such as cognac, benedictine, and chartreuse; bitters (angostura, kloster), sherry, and various types of wine. There are also recipes for rums, such as Jamaica, Cuba, and guava. Recipes for cosmetic products include eau de Cologne, brilliantine, perfume, rosewater, and aromatic extracts and essences. The notebook concludes with some newer recipes for Tokay, Marsala, Madeira, sweet port, "sherry California" and "California red wine" (see p. 67-71). The notebook was found in Ferndale, a Victorian town on the northern coast of California, which was an agricultural and transportation center during the late 1800s, settled by Scandinavian, Swiss-Italian, and Portuguese immigrants. The stationer's label on front pastedown of Brødrene Toftgaard, a paper, printing, and bookbinding firm located at 7 Slotsgade, Aalborg, Denmark, suggests that the notebook may have been brought to California by a Danish immigrant who settled in Ferndale, and added some new California sherry and red wine recipes to his Old World recipes
