Note
  • Extended explanation of the Church as the means of salvation using the allegorical concept of the Church as a ship piloted by Christ. The book is arranged in short expositions or meditations on the ship of the Church, and its passengers, those destined for salvation, in which each aspect of the ship's construction and journey corresponds to the steps of the Christian's journey to Heaven. Each section carries an explanatory title, such as "Come per la cagione del fabricar la naue, si può à quella comparare l'institutione della santa religione," "Come la poppe della naue significa la Fede," and "Come il biscotto e l'acqua che portano seco i nauiganti significa la mortificatione della carne."
  • Imprint from colophon
  • Signatures: A-K8L4
  • Final leaf (L4) is blank
  • Leaf 63 misfoliated 53
  • Woodcuts: large allegorical title vignette, in which the Church is depicted as a ship, with Christ at the helm, accompanied by the apostles, priests, monks, and brothers of the clergy, and at the stern, the "mondani" or citizens of the world; in the lower left corner, a rowboat is ferrying two more pious passengers over to the ship; Valvassore's device on verso of leaf 83, featuring St. Michael standing on the fallen figure of Satan, his lance pressed against the devil's neck; large (10-line) historiated initial "A" on leaf 3, featuring Phaeton driving the chariot of the sun across the sky [?]
  • Text printed in italic type
