Summary expansion
The migdal was the water tower that also served as a lookout tower, the first structure to be erected in the Jewish settlements built during the years of the British mandate, usually overnight under cover of darkness, using prefabricated buildings. Migdal was chosen as the name for the "unaffiliated Labor-Zionist" organization founded in 1943 by three members of the UCLA community, Jacob Biale, Shalom Vineberg, and Aryai Ben-Hillel. Migdal was intended to be a Zionist movement with a more progressive orientation, one which looked to Arab-Jewish rapprochement, and one which could bridge the gap between the youth movement and organizations dominated by middle-aged members of the middle class. Migdal held its first seder in 1944 in the home of Mrs. Gussie Sherman, 5426 La Mirada, in Hollywood, and as the organization expanded, the seder moved to larger venues in restaurants such as Mel Pierson's, the Tower Restaurant in Culver City, and the Courageous Rooster Restaurant, and at UCLA
