Note
  • Starting with his wife's dowry of 400 livres, the aggressive, unscrupulous and highly successful financial and real estate speculator, Paul Poisson Bourvalais (d. 1719) amassed a vast fortune--chateaux, town houses, fine paints (some described here), rare furniture, gems and government offices amounting to some 19,000,000 livres. His arrest and confinement and the confiscation of all his property in March 1716 ended less than a year later with his release and the return of all but a handful of assets
