Note
  • Cover title
  • Possibly printed in Hamburg, Germany by the firm of C. Adler; see Emilio Cueto, Mialhe's colonial Cuba (Historical Association of Southern Florida, 1994), pages 73-76
  • Titles on sheets: Plano pintoresco de la Habana con los numeros de las casas -- Mapa historico pintoresco moderno de la Isla de Cuba
  • Each tinted two-stone lithographic map is surrounded by vignettes of mid-19th century Cuba highlighting its wealth. The Mapa historico y pintoresco moderno de la Isla de Cuba was included in May's 26-view lithographed Album pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba (Album I), although the idea, format, and some views were copied from José María de la Torre's earlier maps of 1847. Its illustrated border contains 16 scenes of Cuban life including a dance, coffee plantation, tobacco fields, sugar mill, cock fight naval view of the taking of El Morro by British forces in 1762, sanctuary of El Cobre, the hurricane of 1846 and others. The map also includes an inset Table of Distances added by May. The Plano pintoresco de La Habana is highly-detailed with street names, buildings, numbers, location of fortifications, military facilities, institutions, and is bordered by 14 vignettes of sites of architectural interest such as the Cathedral, military hospital, Morro Castle, Havana harbor and the Fuente de la Habana en el Paseo de Isabel. The iconic 19th-century images of Cuba, originally drawn by Frederic Mialhe, were outrageously pirated by May and sold in competition with Mialhe. See Emilio Cueto, Mialhe's colonial Cuba (Historical Association of Southern Florida, 1994), page 127
