Note
Map of Riverside County, in two sections, occupies 18 of 24 panels of recto of a promotional brochure for Riverside County, California. The remaining six panels below the map contain two title panels, with titles "Map of Riverside County, California: agriculture, live stock minerals" (front panel when folded), and "Map of Riverside County, California: recreation, worth-while living" (rear panel when folded); and four black-and-white photographic illustrations of Riverside County attractions, including cherry picking at Beaumont, swimming at Desert Hot Springs, recreation at Idyllwild, and "Queen Scheherazade" at the 1948 Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival in Indio. Verso is a full, 24-panel colored pictorial map of Southern California with caption "Historic roads to romance: California's southern empire tourist paradise / cartography by Claude G. Putnam ; research by Karl T. Brown. Copyright 1946 by Roads to Romance, Inc., David Olmsted, Secretary, Long Beach 2, California." Pictorial map depicts area between San Bernardino County and Mexican border, and Pacific Ocean and Colorado River (Boulder Dam to Yuma, Arizona). Topographical features are indicated pictorially, as are points of interest. Along left and right borders are shield-shaped cartouches containing historical vignettes such as Founding of San Bernardino 1851, "Pilgrims" loading hides at Dana Point 1830, Cabrillo discovers San Diego Bay, Sept. 28, 1542, and Portola camps at Los Angeles, Aug. 2, 1769; portraits of historical figures, Father Junípero Serra and Juan Bautista de Anza; and natural attractions such as La Brea Tar Pits and Swallows of San Juan Capistrano. The artist, Claude George Putnam (b. 1884) was an illustrator who lived in Glendale and worked in Los Angeles; for additional information and images of other Putnam maps, see Chris Jepsen's post of Nov. 13, 2011, "Newport Harbor and Claude G.
