Summary expansion
Macrobius' Neoplatonist commentary on Cicero's Somnium Scipionis examines the enigma of the soul and its destiny in the light of Neoplatonism and the astronomical and mathematical sciences of the day. Also included is Macrobius's Saturnalia, a dialogue in seven books dedicated to his son, purporting to represent a conversation at a banquet during the Saturnalian festival among a number of distinguished Romans, including Servius, the Virgilian commentator. The discussion covers a multitude of topics such as dancing, drunkenness, food, religion, geography, and criticism of Virgil's works. Book 7 proceeds to a discussion of various physical, physiological, and psychological questions, centering on the way the brain influences the workings of the body. De die natali, a treatise by the third-century writer Censorinus (not included in the earlier 1514 edition), is addressed as a birthday gift to a rich acquaintance, and includes valuable information on such topics as embryology and birth; numerology; music; climacteric years; chronology; and astrology
