Summary
The recipes are divided into "departments" for recipes for soup, meat, sauce, vegetables, etc. "Spanish department" (p. 127-130) includes recipes for "Estofado", "Fricasseed tripe", "To stuff peppers", "Chili (Spanish) zalza, sauce piquant", and "Sopa Espanola." "Spanish" recipes, as well as those from other countries such as Germany and France are found in every "department". Advertisements by local merchants, mostly for domestic goods (groceries, tableware, furniture), are interspersed throughout. There is also a full page ad for University of Southern California, announcing that its first building has just been completed and the first term opened on Oct. 6, 1880. The faculty list (10 in all, 6 of them women) includes many of the names of those who submitted recipes. The introduction to the book itself was written by the first president of the University, M.M. Bovard
